Publishing a magazine in today’s declining print market is a gutsy move by anyone’s standards. But to know the businesses of the Uptown 17 BRZ (Business Revitalization Zone) is to know tenacity, entrepreneurial spirit, vision and sheer determination. It is that independence and drive which has enabled the Avenue to remain a favourite outdoor shopping and entertainment destination for the past 25 years.
Back then, Uptown 17 was the hub of a growing Calgary. The city was dealing with a recession and outdoor retailers were being threatened by the growing number of indoor malls. Our business community met that challenge by offering unique, one-of-a-kind products, a safe and appealing environment and friendly customer service.
Today, as was the case in 1984, our efforts remain focused on exceeding your expectations. Our 400-plus business operators are still independent owners offering exceptional food, fashions and products from around the world, as well as entertainment, health and wellness, employment, culture, education and commerce. We still strive to provide an enjoyable experience when you come for a visit.
In the future, you will see more shops and unique products as new businesses prepare to open their doors. Our service levels will continue to grow with the development of three properties, all containing parking, retail space and offices. We’re also going to put a lot of emphasis on arts and cultural activities by increasing the number of events and the entertainment we provide at our Gazebo in Tomkins Park.
But first, we want to celebrate our accomplishments and the past 25 years. We’re going to help you explore our Avenue as we introduce Street to Chic: The Shopping Show. Watch for upcoming episodes on our website at uptown17.ca, where you’ll see first-hand why we are Uptown 17 - the Pulse of Calgary.
Thanks for supporting us. We hope to continue to be your outdoor shopping and entertainment destination.
